Exercise is the aimless, and often mindless, expending of energy.

Training is done with a purpose, there is a goal and it’s success is not judged by how tired, sweaty or sore you are when you finish.

A pet dog is exercised simply to tire it out. A student should be trained.

All too often the fitness industry simply tires people out, breaks them down, and tells them it’s good for them. “Look how sweaty and out of breathe you are, that must have been a good workout”

As stretching and flexibility is something that I neglect, I thought I'd share a quick leg, hip and lower back stretch routine.

Weak lower traps can cause shoulder and neck pain/issues and the imbalance of strong upper traps with weak lower traps cause postural problems like upper crossed syndrome which is not only making your body more susceptible to injury but is very ugly looking as well.

Don’t live in your sport.

Jiu Jitsu sparring (as done at our club):
🥋5-6 minute rounds
🥋Around 2 minutes rest
🥋 3-8+ rounds

Pace and/or muscular tension is usually pretty high so we predominantly live in the Glycolytic energy system, in layman’s terms; in ‘THE BURN’, Breathing hard, acid burn in muscles and lots of sweating...basically where most of the fitness industry tries to get people to live.
Hence why I look like this after most sessions.

Given that this is what my sport requires of me, (usually 2-3 times a week), I do not want my conditioning training outside of BJJ to look the same.

I get the Glycolytic ‘burn’ enough in Jiu Jitsu so my other conditioning training is mostly in the other energy systems, Aerobic and Alactic.
This means I get to practise being explosive and powerful in short bursts (Alactic system) and recover amply with deep, steady breathing in the Aerobic energy system.

This benefits my Jiu Jitsu because I can be powerful and explosive when necessary, recover quicker and push the pace for longer (when necessary) before going Glycolytic and feeling the burn.

For those of you reading this who don’t do Jiu Jitsu, remember, you can only red-line a machine for so long before something explodes.

That 23 year old fitness model might be able to do HIIT sessions every day of the week now but it’s neither the most beneficial or suitable training for the vast majority of people, most of the time.

Focus on good mobility, getting stronger and using appropriate and intelligent conditioning programming.

Strength athlete problems🤣 Powerlifters, Oly Lifters and Strongman athletes don't get enough credit 
The average gym member has no idea that fitness is based on strength, mobility, stability, posture, work capacity and proprioception which strength athletes cover almost all of them. The average person bases fitness off of 1 thing. How lean you are. Do you look the part. 
Its unfortunate a majority of people deal with being unfit by eating less and only doing cardio. A true lazy person approach. 
It's more ideal to work on a well rounded program that covers all bases. Strength, mobility and work capacity to start then move on to the others but simply subtracting a few calories is the way a kid would deal with it. An adult or someone with more sense will work on nutrient dense food, reasonable caloric deficit, nutrition timing, behavior modification(stopping alcohol consumption or giving up sweets), pick a eating strategy that fits their lifestyle and train to put on lean muscle tissue as well as detox the body or certain organs so the body runs optimally so its not so damn toxic that it can't filter toxins or has a problem absorbing nutrients.(Inflammation, cortisol, malabsorption and so on people don't take into consideration) It may take a lot of trial and error, the older you are and the toxins, meds you have put into your body will make it more challenging

Hire a real trainer people.. and eat real food

Amaris has been training with me for the last 9 months and she and her hubs @samb3rt manage to fit their workouts around their busy lives. They workout at lunchtime which they schedule in around their jobs and kids. They stay on track with nutrition through the week which allows a little treat or two at the weekend with the family.

These photos prove that taking a little bit of extra time and money to prioritise yourself and your health can reward you with a new body and a hell of a lot more confidence.

Strength training and BJJ are my staples but it’s nice to have some active play too.  Today was climbing with friends.

If you’re looking to get back into activity after some time off then start with something that looks fun, you’ll be a lot more likely to stick to it and consistency will take you a long way to getting fitter and stronger.

If you’re active then a change can be as good as a rest.

Plus socialising is always good
