The pyramids of the Sun, Moon together with the Citadel form the oldest group of ceremonial buildings in the city of Teotihuacan. Aside from being the third largest pyramid in the world (after Cholula and Egypt), Pyramid of the Sun also has underground tunnels that run through it. While it’s sheer size is a huge attraction in itself, the other pyramids were equally as impressive to admire.

The name comes from the tallest tree in the world ‘the hyperion’ – a sequoia semperviren found in northern california – whose size can reach 115.55 metres (close to 380 feet). The aim behind the project was to create a cultural hub that combines urban renaturation, small scale farming, environmental protection and biodiversity.

The aureus as a denomination dates back only to the time of Sulla in 80 BC and had historically been infrequently issued and rare. Worth one hundred sestertii, the aureus represented a very large sum of money, and its use during the Republic and Imperatorial period was primarily for military purposes, struck by traveling mints under the authority of the field commander.
It would not be until Augustus’ coinage reform in 23 BC that the aureus would come into standard, consistent use. In addition to his reorganization of the state and institutions of Rome, Augustus introduced a formal system of fixed ratios between denominations of coins.

The obverse style shows a portrait with significant aesthetic sensitivity compared to his other depictions. It has been speculated that this was a deliberate attempt to assimilate his features with those of the beautiful god Apollo, whom he had adopted as his patron.

The inscription on the reverse of this coin puts it among his war coinage, minted for the payment of his troops during the Actian campaign. It reads “CAESAR DIVI F”, proclaiming Octavian as the “Son of the Divine Julius”, having been adopted by Caesar as his son and made his heir by his will.

The reverse promises peace not only from Octavian’s victory at Actium, but also from the annexation of Galatia and the subjugation of Spain. As this aureus predicts, his reign did indeed give Rome a “golden era” known as the “Pax Romana” (Roman Peace) during which he served for 41 years.

This coin has been a part of many of the iconic collections of the last two centuries and published in reference guides, including the Biaggi Collection, Jameson, Julius Caesar and His Legacy, Ancient Coin Collecting by Wayne Sales, Gold Coins of the World, and The History and Coinage of the Roman Republic. #colosseocollection #ancientcoin #ancientcoins #ancient #ancienthistory #antiquity #coincollecting #coincollection #collecting #coincollector #coinsofinstagram #ancientart #art #ancientartifacts #numismatics #numismatic #numismatica #numismatik #luxury #investment #investing #artphotography #photography #history #romanhistory #rome #romancoin #archaeology #pedigree #classicalart

Theater of Morgantina | Enna | Sicily | Italy
•
The Theater of Morgantina is set in Sicily in the province of Enna.
It was built by the wealthy citizen Archela son of Eukleida and consecrated by him to Dionisio, as stated in an inscription. The current theater auditorium was built in the 3rd century. B.C. where another theatrical building already stood, smaller in size.
The theater is part of a large complex connected to the agora. The cavea, built in limestone, reaches a diameter of 57.70 meters. It was divided into two sectors: a lower one, consisting of sixteen orders of seats, and an upper one, in beaten earth. It rests on a clearing slightly sloping of the rocky ridge, which was reinforced with landfill material (sand and earth). This material was contained by thick walls, whose weight was supported by buttresses.

Mayapan is a Pre-Columbian Maya site a couple of kilometers south of the town of Telchaquillo in Municipality of Tecoh, approximately 40 km south-east of Mérida and 100 km west of Chichen Itza; in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. Mayapan was the political and cultural capital of the Maya in the Yucatán Peninsula during the Late Post-Classic period from the 1220s until the 1440s. Estimates of the total city population are 15,000–17,000 persons, and the site has more than 4,000 structures within the city walls, and additional dwellings outside.⁣

The site has been professionally surveyed and excavated by archeological teams, beginning in 1939; five years of work was done by a team in the 1950s, and additional studies were done in the 1990s. Since 2000, a collaborative Mexican-United States team has been conducting excavations and recovery at the site, which continue.⁣

The aftermath of the storm in my previous post. Not my photo, I was too distracted to be quick enough to get this. I did edit some edits in Lightroom. I made a post about the sky being on fire last week. The sunset after the storm makes that one look tame. The skies are huge here, because the land is so flat. So we get amazing clouds and sunrises and sunsets.

This airfield looks like something from the Cold War. I think that’s probably because that’s exactly what it is. We are on the East side of the Iron Curtain here. One thing I learned was that a lot of archaeological sites were unknown before the wall came down. People couldn’t use aerial photography for obvious reasons, so a lot of sites have only been identified since the 90s. The henge we are excavating is one of those. It’s a huge excavation, in terms of area it’s probably the second biggest I’ve ever been on, only beaten by Ephesus which is a different animal entirely!

We discovered another beautiful Lackawaxen Projectile Point with acdustal fracture today, this time out of one of our screens as we continued to excvate the feature pictured in my previous post.
We are beginning to uncover a few of these types of points lately as it seems to be a very active component we're in where, as you can imagine, the people here were actively involved in hunting and killing all varieties of local game.
We often find projectile points in fire-pits because when indigenous peoples killed game they would often throw the animal, or large parts of the animal, right into the fire-pit where, upon roasting, the deeply impacted point would fall out and remain in the pit itself. Very often we will also find the broken tips in the same pits as well.
In case you missed my post from the other day the Lackawaxen Point was typically knapped from Argillicious Shales (Green Shale in this case) where local bedrock outcrops were utilized to knap this  point. Easy to knap and abundant in its source materials; it was more a disposable point and because of its material composition degrades heavily when buried for close to 7,000 years.

I’ll confess that I know little about ancient history, but the ingenue of our ancestors of long ago, and the intellect of historians and architects who piece together information about previous civilisations are incredibly admirable. Pictured is Namer, born 3150BCE, the first King of Egypt and is able to boast of a peaceful unification of a country, at the beginning of the First Dynastic Period. Historical evidence was able to lay this unification to his efforts, as the theory that it was a different king called Menes, who united the country in the First Dynastic Period through conquest, was disputed. We now can understand that Narmer and Menes were actually the same person- Narmer was his real name, and Menes an honorific. Not that Narmer would have anticipated the high interest contemporary historians, such as acclaimed Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, would take in him, but imagine having your conquests attributed to a figure who nobody knew was, in actuality, you! •••

We hit this 7,000 year old collapsed rock-lined hearth a few days ago, and are continuing the painstakingly laborious task of finishing it up today.
Exposing this fire-pit like this, even in its collapsed state, will enable us to take soil samples from the interior of the hearth which through the process of flotation (we basically dump the dirt in a bathtub, screen off what floats, which is typically carbon based material i.e. fragments of bone, seeds, extinct plant remains etc., then analyze these remains. It's the science of paleo-palynology) will enable us to discern what types of plant and animals they were consuming here. This information will then give us a better grasp regarding the dietary habits of the indigenous people here, and how healthy their population was etc. This data can even give us a time frame as to when they occupied this site (i.e. summer, winter, fall etc.) as certain plants only bloom during certain seasons. For example hickory trees and chestnut trees only bloom during the fall etc. So if we find hickory nut husks or chestnuts contained therein, then I know those people were here in the fall as opposed to the spring and so on.
In addition, we will find dateable carbon (charcoal or burnt wood etc.) within the sampling matrix of the hearth, in addition to projectile points and other tools.
Ironically enough, within some of the soil matrix taken from the periphery of the pit was discovered this beautiful Lackawaxen Projectile Point shown in the next slide.

The Fate of the Quinametzin (HQ prints available!) Within the valleys of southern central Mexico and the Golf coast, a giant is being stalked; the largest of it's american kin. This columbian mammoth treads carefully through the open grasslands of an increasingly forested ecosystem, that within each passing year becomes less suitable to sustain the animals massive frame. The hunter is a member of an ethnically diverse group of people, broadly tied together by their shared lithic traditions, called the clovis; they came into the Americas around 13,000 years ago.

Digging through layer by layer of dirt to get to soil that the Apache people once lived on about 500 ya. We believe they may have been butchering and cooking at this particular site due to the abundance of bison bones and hearthstones.

I've learned so much about archaeology over the summer and I'm grateful to @lubbock_lake_landmark for giving me my start!

Painted grave stele of Hediste | from Dimitrias, Thessaly | Hellenistic period, 3rd-2nd c. BC | Athanasakio Archaeological Museum of Volos | Thessaly | Greece
——
“The Fates unfolded sorrowful thread from their spindle for Hediste, when newly-wed faced the pains of childbirth. Miserable, because it was not to embrace her child neither to moisten her infant's lips with her breasts. As soon as the baby saw the light of the sun, the Fortune fell on these two, with cruelty, and drew them in one tomb, both mother and child.”

Life of an undercover nerd: Ancient Origins Magazine, Ancient Medicine Edition. One of my finest publications in my young career. How ancient medicine was practiced in warfare, and how medicine experts use these same tactics today. This co-published issue hits home for me. I considered anyone in the medical field a hero, such as my mother and all nurses, dentists, and surgeons, and the brave corpsmen I had the honor to serve alongside of in Afghanistan, where they saved countless lives of Marines and civilians. And since it’s July, yes, I’m wearing a Julius Caesar 2020 shirt to celebrate the month named after an icon I look up to. “Renovatio Imperii.” - J
