This Way Up Episode 2 airs tonight at ten! During filming as a costume team we set ourselves the challenge of going #secondhandfirst, to see whether we could source as much as possible second hand, vintage or from charity shops before buying new. The fashion industry was not harmed in the making of this series I can say, but we did manage to spend a quarter of our budget in charity shops, and we also shopped from some brilliant ethical and sustainable designers.

Tonight Áine wears two looks - turquoise jumper from @beyondretro , skirt is Topshop bought via @oxfamonlineshop Her black and white knit jumper and scarf are from our fave Irish brand @electronicsheep, red skirt is from @beyondretro and cowboy boots are from @goodguysdontwearleather
Also on set keepwarm coat @ecoalf , out of shot keep warm boots from @pozu #thiswayup #secondhandfirst #costumedesign #ethicalfashion #whomademyclothes #thecostumedirectory #ootd

Ok costume folk, looking for feedback. @extinctionrebellion are calling for a boycott of buying new clothes because of the growing social and environmental impact of fast fashion. Obviously we’d all be out of jobs if we sent actors to set naked, but as costume designers we do make or buy more clothing per job than most people will buy in a lifetime, so our collective capacity to make a difference, either positive or negative is huge. Aside from sourcing from costume houses, who shops second hand first? What puts people off? When under pressure is everyone more likely to rush to tk maxx or primark than to a charity shop? Do people shop second hand / vintage / charity shop online? What would make it easier to shop second hand? Are people put off by inconsistent prices in charity shops? Are people likely to keep things even if they don’t use them just because they are cheap? ... any thoughts greatly appreciated x #Repost @xr.boycottfashion ・・・
By #2050, it’ll use up 26% of a carbon budget associated with 2 degrees of warming. If the government turns a blind eye to this catastrophic ecocide, we must act. We urgently need to restore #biodiversity and ensure food production for #future generations - and yet we are STILL growing cotton for clothes we don’t need.

There is nothing quite like meeting the people behind products you love. Last week Ilishio met with Stacey from @kingandtuckfield who are doing so much to increase the sustainability of their products and brand, it’s inherent to their brand values and they are so open and honest about their journey and the product is beautifully crafted in London! They currently have a sale on and also have a hand me down section so you can buy their pieces second hand!! #ethicalfashion #sustainablefashion #whomademyclothes #madeinuk

!! Rent / borrow / swap / vintage / charity shop ... why not get something original you may even look forward to wearing again?!
・・・
In the UK, we’re expected to spend £2.7 billion pounds this summer alone, on over 50 million outfits that we’ll only wear once.
Today, @barnardos_uk has released a poll with these shocking figures around British fashion consumption in the summer season. The bottom line: we’ll purchase more than 50 MILLION SINGLE-USE OUTFITS THIS SUMMER.
The study also found that the culprits behind these purchases are typically our summer highlights, from weddings & formals to bbqs & music festivals. In a nation known for cloud cover, it makes total sense that we want to look our best when the sun does shine - but these findings are clear proof that our stylish summer statements are costing the Earth.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
THRIFT. thrift, vintage and secondhand threads are an affordable and low-impact option. Whether you pop into your local charity shop or try online site like @depop, @thredup or @vestiaireco , buying second hand also helps divert someone else’s stuff away from landfill.
BORROW / SWAP. You’ve got a family wedding this summer, so does your friend, and probably everyone else you know. Why not raid your friend’s wardrobe and get your look for free?
RENT. The Barnardos survey also found that 1 in 4 people is embarrassed to wear the same outfit to a special occasion more than once. Enter the rental model. If we know we aren’t going to rewear something, the rental model removes the purchase factor all together, and offers a solution for a temporary shiny new outfit.
REWEAR. Contrary to the narrative we’re fed by celeb culture, clothes are meant to be worn more than once. Yep, that means the outfit you bought for some party last year would also look lovely at some party this year. Say it with us: “Loved clothes last”
CONSIDER. Sometimes, the most important consideration we can make in impacting a garment’s footprint is to only buy the clothes we know we’ll wear many times over.
What are your summer style solutions that keep sustainability in mind? Let us know ⬇️ #FashionRevolution #lovedclotheslast #secondhandfirst

Have you heard of the Sustainable Development Goals? I had but didn’t know much about them or how they relate to the clothes we wear, buy and make. GOAL 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls ️‍ On our free online course, #FashionsFuture and the Sustainable Development Goals (which begins in just one week!), we explore the UN Goals and how we can reach them as citizens, consumers, and fashion professionals.
In our gender-focused chapter, @careintuk’s Nilufar Verjee explores the ways in which women and girls depend on the fashion supply chain, along with its often oppressive and violent structures.
Why does gender-based violence persist in the garment sector? How does fashion’s global network reinforce gender inequality? What can you do to support the women who make your clothes?

@salvagedproject making a great point here. Yes, love island is both great tv (can’t pretend) and morally problematic in equal measure... but let’s think about questioning all the online fashion labels that profit so much from Love Island and asking them #whomademyclothes ?! Repost @salvagedproject ・・・
Love Island is back on ya tele.
Love it or hate it. There is one serious issue we need to discuss before it starts.
Which is that within 12 months at least 5 or 6 of the girls from the show will have their own fast fashion range or 'line' as they like to call it for an online fashion retailer that usually has low standards of cheap materials used that cause huge environmental impact.
Low wages paid and a lack of workers rights for the people who make the clothes.
Clothes are made with an over estimate of how well the line will do meaning they quickly get put into sales encouraging people to buy clothes they don't need which ends up in landfill.

We need stricter rules around clothes. But more than this people need to protest against this fast fashion with celebrity trend with their money aka fuck fast fashion
